Free Educational Sites for Kids & Teens

I’ve put together a round-up of some of the best fun (and free!) educational sites for kids and teens that we’ve found. And these aren’t your average educational sites – there’s some truly unique and incredible resources in this list – from tracking sharks to free MIT classes.

My kids have tried out nearly everything on the list (and the ones they haven’t yet are on our list do explore more).

Learn to Tie Knots

Learn to tie all sorts of knots with these animated tutorials.

Learn to Code – while playing a game

This is a great one if you want to get your older kids or teens (or even dabble yourself) into learning to code. And it’s free! Check it out here.​

Code Monkey – 30-day free trial

Looking for coding fun for younger kids? While this site isn’t completely free, you can get a free, 30-day trial to Code Monkey (affiliate link) to try it out and see how you like it.

Free Classes from MIT

MIT offers a range of completely free classes as part of their OpenCourseWare. If you have a child or student interested in programming, they have an extensive list of courses in Electrical Engineering & Computer Science.

Practice typing with classic literature

I’ve been looking for a good typing program for our kids, and I stumbled across this amazing site! They have a range of classic literature to practice typing with.

​Paper airplane instructions

This site has instructions for folding all sorts of paper airplanes.

​Learn Morse Code!

My kids go through phases of being obsessed with Morse Code. Google created this very engaging and fun way to learn it.

​Moon atlas 

An atlas of different moons in our solar system.

​Marine life tracker

This site tracks the location of all sorts of marine life. They also have free STEM curriculum for different grades.

​Internet Arcade

The Internet Arcade has TONS of old games – everything from the old Oregon Trail, an ant simulator (one of my kids loves it), etc. and lots of old educational games.

​Phet Simulations

Free science simulations and experiments. You’re probably already aware of this resource if you’re a teacher, but in case you haven’t heard of it, make sure you check it out!

The Odin Project

It’s hard to overstate how phenomenal this site is. It’s a free, open-source web development curriculum that takes you from knowing absolutely nothing about coding to having a full portfolio of projects and being able to confidently apply for jobs.
And it’s really unique as far as most teaching resources for coding go – it’s project based, and teaches students to think like a programmer rather than just memorize information. I went through Foundations and part of their Ruby on Rails path a few years ago, and learned an incredible amount. One of our teens will be going through this curriculum next school year.

​Small disclaimer – part of this curriculum encourages those learning to use Discord to ask questions, share their projects, and get support. This might not be something parents are comfortable with their teens doing. You are still able to complete the curriculum without participating in the Discord.
